I wished to make portraits of individuals—the taxi driver and shopkeeper and IT professional, also the magician, NYPD officer, DJ, rapper, farmer, drag queen, pharmacist, gas station attendant . . . remarkable people that may have their roots in one particular community, but represent only themselves.
